Typology is the medium in design where the identity of an object carries meaning, allowing it to communicate a message through its very essence. This message may align with the object’s literal function or emerge in contrast to it. Through design poetics, these messages are distilled into clear, thoughtful expressions, enabling stories to be conveyed with elegance and simplicity.

Project Details
This series of small projects was designed to prepare us for the Master’s project. Each task explored the theme of typology through the lens of a random object, encouraging us to investigate how meaning and identity can be drawn from its form. The exercise challenged us to establish connections between these objects and our own future project, building a bridge between open-ended exploration and focused design research.

Typology Class with Professor Ralph Ball, For this project, I was given the hammer as my object of exploration, focusing on cultural preferences and perceptions of bias. Traditionally, a hammer is seen as useful for a single purpose: to swing and strike. To challenge this assumption, I created a series of dysfunctional hammers that questioned how we define function and identity. The concept played with the idea that one may “look the part,” but this does not necessarily mean one is required to act in that way.
